About the Fishing in Ascension Bay

Ascension Bay is part of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Preserve and it offers a unique fishing environment. You will be able to fish wide open flats for Permit, Bonefish and Barracuda. As of part of this unique environment you will be able to fish the mangrove areas with wider pools and ponds and very tight channels that a lot of baby Tarpon and Snook reside in.

Our primary quarry is Bonefish as they are aggressive and there are lots of them! The fish diversity is incredible. This unique composition make it one of the best places in the world for a legitimate shot at the "Grand Slam" which occurs when an angler lands a Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon all on the same day. Add a Snook to the mix and you've got yourself a "Super Slam!". In late April till July you will be able to fish for migratory tarpon that can reach up to 200lbs. Other species you will be able to hunt for are Mayan Perch, Snapper and Jacks ( including the Jack Crevalle ).

You will fish from very nice 23' Panga boats, and you will have 2 guides per 2 anglers. This means that while one guide is on the deck poling the boat along the flats looking for fish in the distance, the other guide will be on the casting deck working hand in hand with the anglers spotting fish nearby. It is the ONLY way to fish the flats, and fairly exclusive to this outfit. Wading is done with a 1:1 guide to client ratio.

Fishing gear:

  • 7-8 wt rod and reel package used for Bonefish, Jacks, Snook.

  • 9 wt rod and reel package used for Permit, Snook, Tarpon

  • 10 wt rod and reel package used for Jack Crevalle, Permit, Tarpon, barracuda.

I use Orvis H3 and Winston rods and Orvis Mirage reels. Honestly, there are a lot of really good options out there, check out this test for a good reference before you purchase your next saltwater combo: https://www.yellowstoneangler.com/gear-review/2018-8-weight-shootout-g-loomis-asquith-best-fly-rod-comparison

Fishing flies:

There aren’t any very specific flies for the targeted fish species at Ascension Bay. I always get different size and weight for each fly model so that I can quickly adapt to different water depth on the flats or mangroves. Any of the local shops can offer you a good selection of bonefish, permit, tarpon and snook flies. My to go place for a good selection of flies is www.discountflies.com

They have good prices and a wide variety for all the saltwater species. I’ll be more than happy to assist you and send you links of the models that I have had success with in the past.

 Accommodations

IMG_0840.jpg

The rooms at Casa Viejo Chac are as good as you'll find in Punta Allen. Clean, comfortable, air-conditioned and each has it's own private bathroom with hot water showers. The rooms, located on the second floor have been recently upgraded with 2 full size beds per room.

There is a pool table on the second floor and a palapa has been added to the 3rd floor offering great sunset views. Also a great place to learn all about the Spanish word "siesta".

The food is prepared by two of the best local cooks in Punta Allen, Pepe and Mundi. An average day consists of fruit, juice, eggs or french toast for breakfast. The lunch coolers have sandwiches, chips, water and cokes. Dinner choices range from fresh fish to chicken fajitas and lobster when in season. Soups are one of the cooks specialties and desserts are also served nightly.

YOUR TRIP

The fly fishing adventure starts at your local airport before boarding your flight to Cancun. Ideally you will need to arrive on Saturday as early as possible in Cancun. Once you arrive there, you will clear passport control and customs and then pick up your luggage. Outside of the airport you will be greeted by shuttle driver that will help you load your bags and then you will be on your way to Punta Allen. This is a 4 hour drive with the first half on paved highways ( Cancun to Tulum ) and then the next half on a rough gravel and dirt road ( Tulum to Punta Allen ). The drive will have cold drinks available but you should bring snacks for the ride.

When you arrive at Casa Vieja Chac, the staff will help you unload your luggage and take your bags upstairs to your accommodations.

Once you are settled in your room, you will be served either lunch or early afternoon snack ( ceviche, guacamole and nachos ).

Then you will have time to get your gear ready for the first day of fishing ( Sunday ).

Dinner is served at 7:30PM and breakfast is served at 7:30AM everyday. You will have your lunch packed on the boat with cold drinks and water available as well.

The next 6 days you will be fishing from 8AM to 4PM. Each boat has two guides which makes sharing a boat more efficient especially for wading.
